As of May 2019, the total number of telephone subscribers in Nepal was 139.32 million, with 39,988,752 mobile subscribers and 798,704 fixed line subscribers. Historically, Nepal's mobile network began to take shape in the early 2000s. By 2013, there were four major telecom operators: Nepal Telecom (formerly known as Nepal Telecommunications Corporation), Ncell, SmartCell, and CG Telecom, which was set to launch its services in 2019. The introduction of 4G LTE services in 2017 marked a significant milestone in the country's mobile network development.
In recent years, there has been a focus on improving internet access and mobile broadband services. By May 2019, Nepal had 49.65 million mobile broadband subscribers, with an internet penetration rate of 63.31%. The country has also seen the launch of 5G services, with Nepal Telecom planning to deploy 5G nationwide after the completion of 4G coverage.
